Don't bother
It takes some real effort to turn the life of the 20th century's most able and complex military commander into something approaching the dull.

Rommel was an enigma - a truly extraordinary risk taker and tactician, who lead not so much from the front as ahead of the front.

Sure, the book supplies the requisite Boys Own tales of desert dare-doing and chivalry, but a lack of analysis of the crucial pre-war years of the German Weimar Republic leaves a gaping hole in the middle of Rommel's life.

The book decends all too rapidly into join-the-dots military history, with few genuine insights into the man himself.

James Brown got sacked from Loaded for carrying a feature on Rommel. Anyone rushing to judge either man would do well to read up on the extraordinary life - and death - of the Desert Fox.

Sadly, this isn't the book you need.
