"Carn then, give'er a read!"
Set in Perth, Western Australia, this story of two working class families takes you through 20 years, slowly shifting from the depression on to more modern times, and in parallel providing , insights into the growth and development of the city of Perth as people moved from the farms to the urban environment. But all from a very human perspective. That said, I found the spectral overtones were laid on a little too thickly, and without really adding anything to the main story, which is strong enough to stand alone from the ghostly element, which is probably why is seemed to awkward an element in the book.

Lots of characters, but the twenty year time frame gives them chance to evolve and to be fleshed out so that you do want to keep on reading to find out what happens to them. And Perth provides a great backdrop as a maturing seaside city. A great read even if you’ve not been there, all the better is you have, and can picture these people in the context of the Swan river, Fremantle and the surf.

and thanks to reviewer budd case on amazon.com for an inspired review title.
