The book you've seen everyone reading on the tube
You'd really love to hate Zadie Smith. She's smart - ex Oxbridge, beautiful and now rich thanks to this, her first and award-winning novel.

But you can't take away from her the fact that, however sprawling it is, she's pulled of a great feat in this book. It's an affectionate and realistic homage to life in West London, with eccentric characters who *just about* manage to stay on the right side of credability to sustain your interest.

It'd be so nice to hate her, especially seeing as the forthcoming Channel 4 version of this book also looks like a winner, but this book demands your respect - however jealous it makes you!
